Basic nature
Chemical formula: BaCl₂.
Molecular weight: 208.23 g/mol (anhydrous barium chloride);
244.26 g/mol (barium chloride dihydrate, BaCl₂·2H₂O).
Appearance: white crystal or powder (anhydrous barium chloride) or
colorless transparent crystal (barium chloride dihydrate).
Density:
Anhydrous barium chloride: 3.86 g/cm³.
Barium chloride dihydrate: 3.097 g/cm³.
Melting point:
Anhydrous barium chloride: 962°C.
Barium chloride dihydrate: about 120°C (loss of crystal water).
Boiling point: 1560°C (anhydrous barium chloride).
Solubility:
Soluble in water, solubility increases significantly with temperature (about 37 g/100 mL water at 20°C).
Hygroscopicity: anhydrous barium chloride has strong hygroscopicity, and
will absorb water when exposed to air, forming barium chloride dihydrate.
