- Structure: Composed of acetate ion (CH₃COO⁻) and sodium ion (Na+)
- pH value: Weakly alkaline aqueous solution (pH 8-9)
Physical Properties
- Appearance: White crystalline powder (anhydrous) or colorless transparent crystal (trihydrate)
- Solubility: Highly soluble in water (46.5g/100mL at 20°C), slightly soluble in ethanol
- Melting point: 324°C (anhydrous) or 58°C (trihydrate, dehydration decomposition)
- Density: 1.528 g/cm³ (anhydrous) or 1.45 g/cm³ (trihydrate)
- Hygroscopic: Trihydrate is highly hygroscopic while anhydrous form has low hygroscopicity
Thermal Stability
When heated to high temperatures, sodium acetate decomposes to form sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) and methane (CH₄).
